John Bowyer Buchanan Nichols (November 13, 1859 - June 2, 1939)[1], known as Bowyer Nichols, was an English poet.

Life[]

Nichols was the son of Francis Morgan Nichols.[1] His grandfather was John Bowyer Nichols (1779-1863), proprietor of Gentleman's Magazine, and his great-grandfather was poet John Nichols (1745-1826).[2]

He attended Balliol College, Oxford.[3]

He married Catherine Louisa Pusey, daughter of Captain Edward Bouverie Pusey, on 4 August 1892.[1] Poet Robert Nichols was their son.

He lived at Hanger Hill, Ealing, London, and at Lawford Hall, Manningtree, Essex. He was an antiquarian, and was invested as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.).[1]

He became a trustee of the Wallace Collection.

Recognition[]

He won the Newdigate Prize in 1883 for his poem, Inez de Castro.[3]
