Colleen Thibaudeau (December 29, 1925 - February 2, 2012) was a Canadian poet.[1]

Life[]

Thibaudeau was born in Toronto and raised in St. Thomas, Ontario. She attended the University of Toronto, where she completed her Master's thesis in 1949.[1]

She married poet and playwright James Reaney in 1951. The couple had three children: James Stewart (born 1952) and John Andrew (1954), born in Toronto, and Susan Alice Elizabeth, born 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[2]

Her first book of poetry, Lozenges, appeared in 1965; seven more would follow before her death, in London, Ontario, in 2012.[1]

Writing[]

The Dictionary of Literary Biography says that Thibaudeau was "known as a children's poet, exploring such forms as concrete poetry and participation poetry, as well as a writer of thematically complex, linguistically demanding poetry for mature audiences."[3]

Recognition[]

In 2012 the Colleen Thibodeau Outstanding Contribution Award was established by the League of Canadian Poets and Thibaudeau's family. The purpose of the Award is "to honour and recognize a substantial volunteer project or series of projects that significantly nurture and support poets and poetry across Canada."[4]
