Life[]

Youth and education[]

Guilpin was the eldest son of John Guilpin and Thomasina (Everard) of Norfolk. He was educated at Highgate Grammar School.[1].

He entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1588,[2] and Gray's Inn in 1591.[1]

Career[]

Guilpin published the satiric Skialetheia; or, A shadowe of truth anonymously in 1598.[1] The book was among 7 banned and burned in June 1599 by Archbishop Whitgift and Bishop Bancroft.[3]

Thomas Corser suggests that Guilpin may have known satirist and playwright John Marston, on the basis of the latter's dedication of a satire against Joseph Hall to "Master E.G.".[2]
