Karen Chase (born 1943) is an American poet.[1]
Life[]
Chase lives, writes, and teaches in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.[2]
Chase was the poet in residence at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center for more than a decade teaching poetry writing to severely disturbed psychiatric patients. She then founded and ran the Camel River Writing Center and has twice served on the resident faculty of The Robert Frost Place.[3]
Her poems have appeared in many magazines, including The New Yorker, The New Republic, and the Yale Review, and in major anthologies such as The Norton Introduction to Poetry and Billy Collins's Poetry 180.[2]
She is a trustee of The Amy Clampitt Fund, whose mission is to benefit poetry and the literary arts.[3]
Recognition[]
Chase's debut collection of poems, Kazimierz Square, was short-listed for Best Indie Poetry Book of 2000. She has been a Rockefeller Bellagio Fellow and a MacDowell Fellow.[2]
Billy Collins included Chase's poem "Before She Died" in his 2003 anthology, Poetry 180.[4]
