Tony Mitton (born 1951) is an English poet who writes children's verse. He has been called "one of the best children’s poets writing today".[1]
Life[]
Youth and education[]
Born in Tripoli, Libya,[1] the son of a British army officer,[2] Mitton grew up in Hong Kong and Germany.[1]
He came to England at 9, and was educated in a boarding school in Suffolk..[3]
He studied English literature at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge,[2] earning a B.A.,[3] as well as a PGCCE diploma from the Cambridge department of education.[2]
Career[]
In his early career Mitton worked as a primary school teacher, and then as a special needs teacher, in Cambridge.[2]
His debut collection, Plum, was published in 1998. He has since written more than a dozen books for children.
He has 2 grown-up children of his own. He lives with his wife in Cambridge.[2]
Recognition[]
- His comic rap narrative book, Royal Raps, won the Nottinghamshire Children's Book Award in 1996.[3]
- The Red and White Spotted Handkerchief won a silver award at the 2000 Nestlé Smarties Book Prize.[3]
- The Tale of Tales was shortlisted for the CLPE (Centre in Literacy for Primary Education) poetry award in 2004.[3]
- In 2005 his verse picture book Spookyrumpus won the Sheffield Children's Book Award, the Dundee City of Discovery Picture Book Award and the Portsmouth Picture Book award.[3]
