Forrest hamer

Forrest Hammer. Courtesy Times Ten: An anthology of northern California Poets.

Forrest Hamer (born 1956)[1] is an Arican-American poet, psychologist, and psychoanalyst.

Life[]

Hamer was born in North Carolina.[1] He was educated at Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley).

He lives in Oakland, California, where he is a practicing psychologist, and lectures in psychology at Berkeley.[1]

He is the author of 3 poetry collections, and has taught at the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshops.

His poetry has been anthologized in Poet’s Choice: Poems for everyday life, The Geography of Home: California’s poetry of place, The Ringing Ear: Black poets lean south, Blues Poems, Word of Mouth: An anthology of gay American poetry, and three editions of The Best American Poetry; and has appeared in many magazines and literary journals including The American Poetry Review, [2] Beloit Poetry Journal, Kenyon Review, Callaloo, Ploughshares,[3] Shenandoah, TriQuarterly, and ZYZZYVA.

Recognition[]

His 1st collection, Call and Response, won the Beatrice Hawley Award, and his 2nd, Middle Ear, received the Northern California Book Award. He has received fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the California Arts Council.

Billy Collins included Hamer's poem, "Lesson," in his 2003 anthology Poetry 180.[4]
