Jane Duran (born 1944) is a Cuban-born English poet.
Life[]
Duran was born to an American mother and a Spanish father who had fought with the Republican army in the Spanish Civil war. He fled Spain after Franco's victory but would never talk about his experiences. The themes of silences, loss and exile haunt much of her work. Duran was brought up in the United States and Chile, moving to England in 1966 after graduating from Cornell University.
She lives in London with her Algerian husband and their son.[1]
In 1997 she, and poets Mimi Khalvati, and Pascale Petit, founded the Poetry School in London, to provide structured, high quality teaching programmes for adults to develop their poetry from its beginnings through to advanced level. The Poetry School has grown into the only major national organisation whose solely focused on teaching the art of writing poetry, with established teaching centres throughout England as well as online courses and downloadable courses and activities.[2]
Recognition[]
Breathe Now, Breathe won the Forward Poetry Prize for Best First Collection.
In 2005 Duran received a Cholmondeley Award.
