Youth and education[]
Leveridge was born in Hockering, Norfolk county, England in 1879.[1]
She came to Canada at the age of 4 with her parents, who settled at Coe Hill in Hastings county, Ontario.[1]
Wanting to be a teacher, in 1899 she went on her own to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she attended the collegiate,[2] and then earned a teacher's diploma at the Normal School in Winnipeg.[1]
Career[]
After graduating, Leveridge taught school near Glenboro, Manitoba, for a summer. After spending 2 years in Manitoba, she returned to Ontario and continued teaching there for about 6 years.[2]
In 1916 she came to Toronto as a stenographer,[2] and from then did office work in that city.[1]
Her poems, articles, and short stories were published in many Canadian and U.S. periodicals, and collected in numerous anthologies.[1]
She was a member of the Canadian Literature Club, the Canadian Women's Press Club, and the Canadian Authors Association.[1]
Writing[]
Her poem "Over the Hills of Home" was written in memory of her younger brother Frank, who died in World War I.[3] "Over the Hills of Home" was widely republished and quoted.[1]
