Long meter, or long metre (also called long measure), is one of the most popular verse forms in the English language, used in both poetry and song lyrics.
Form[]
Long meter consists of four-line stanzas, or quatrains, of iambic tetrameter with a cross rhyme (a-b-a-b) rhyme scheme.[1]
Long meter is similar to short meter, which consists of similarly rhyming quatrains of iambic trimeter; and to Common meter, which consists of similarly rhyming quatrains formed of alternating lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter.
