Mary Josephine Benson (March 20, 1887 - August 31, 1965) was a Canadian poet and writer of non-fiction.[1]

Benson was born Mary Josephine Trotter in 1887. Her cousin was poet Bernard Freeman Trotter.[2] Except for 3 years (1912-1915) spent in Toronto, she lived in Port Hope all of her life.[1]

After graduating, she moved to Toronto to become a journalist. She was editor of the Canadian Courier magazine supplement from 1912 to 1914, then briefly worked for Everyman magazine. In 1915 she married Harry W. Benson (1886-1946), and returned to Port Hope.[2]

Recognition[]

Benson won a poetry prize for her poem "The Bitter Lover."[2]

A branch of the Port Hope Public Library was named after her.[3]
