Michael George Laskey (born 15 August 1944) is an English poet and editor.

Life[]

Laskey was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire.[1]

He was educated at Gresham's School and St John's College, Cambridge, where he read English.[1]

After Cambridge, Laskey worked for 10 years as a teacher in secondary schools and further education in Spain and England. [1]

Laskey has published 4 poetry collections, including New & Selected Poems (2008), and 3 pamphlets.[1]

In 1989, Laskey founded the international Aldeburgh Poetry Festival and served as its director for 10 years. He subsequently became chairman of The Poetry Trust (the organisation which runs the Festival) from 2003 to 2008.[1]

In 1991, with Roy Blackman he founded poetry magazine Smiths Knoll, and since 2002 has edited it (with Joanna Cutts). In 2005 he was awarded an Arts Council International Writing Fellowship at the Banff Centre in Canada. [1]

Laskey works as a freelance writer, running workshops and teaching creative writing for many organisations including the University of East Anglia, the Arvon Foundation, the Open College of the Arts, and in schools.[2]

Laskey is married to a general practitioner, and they have 3 sons. Since 1978, they have lived in Suffolk.[1]

Recognition[]

Cloves of Garlic (1988) was a joint winner of the 3nd Smith/Doorstop Pamphlet Competition.[3]

His earliest 2 collections, Thinking of Happiness (1991) and The Tightrope Wedding (1999) were both Poetry Book Society Recommendations. The Tightrope Wedding was also shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.[3]
