Moira O'Neill was the pen name of Agnes Shakespeare Higginson Skrine (1864-1955), an Irish poet.
Life[]
O'Neill was born Agnes Higginson in co. Antrim.[1]
In 1895 she married Walter Skrine, and lived on his ranch near High River, Alberta, Canada. The Skrines lived there for 6 years, and then returned to Ireland.[1]
She wrote 2 books of poetry under the pseudonym "Moira O’Neill". She also wrote for Blackwood's Magazine.[1]
Her daughter, Molly Keane, was a novelist.[2]
Recognition[]
On O'Neill's death, Poet Laureate John Masefield wrote a tribute to her.[1]
In popular culture[]
Her poem "Sea Wrack" was set to music by Hamilton Harty.[2]
Composer Charles Villiers Stanford set 6 of her poems to music for his 1901 song-cycle, "An Irish Idyll."[3]
