Newton Smith is an American poet and academic.
Life[]
Smith began his post-secondary education at Georgia Tech, but switched to the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to study poetry. He served for 3 years in the U.S. Army as a Russian linguist, then returned to UNC and earned a Ph.D.[1]
Smith has retired from the University of Western Carolina,[1] where he taught professional writing and literature, and served for a time as faculty chair.[2] He has taught poetry to a wide range of writers, from second grade to retirees as well as undergraduates and graduate students.[1]
Beginning in the 1970s, he published widely in literary magazines, including Southern Poetry Review, Carolina Quarterly, Ann Arbor Review, and others.[1]
He was a founding editor (with William Matthews and Russell Banks) of literary magazine Lillabulero; he has also been a staff writer for Asheville Poetry Review and president of the Appalachian Writer’s Association.[2]
