Peregrine Bingham, the elder (1754 - 28 May 1826) was an English poet and biographer.[1]
Life[]
Bingham was the son of antiquary George Bingham, B.D., the rector of Pimperne, Dorset.[1]
He was educated at New College, Oxford, where he earned a B.C.L. in 1780, and was a fellow, 1774-1787.[2]
He married Amy Bowles, the daughter of poet William Lisle Bowles, in 1807.[2] He was the father of Peregrine Bingham the younger, by a previous marriage.
He became rector of Edmondsham, Dorset, in 1782, and of Berwick St. John, Wiltshire, in 1817. For a time he was chaplain of HMS Agincourt. He died aged 72.[1]
Writing[]
He wrote Memoirs of his father, prefixed to Dissertations, Essays, and Sermons, by the late George Bingham, B.D., 2 vols., 1804. These Memoirs, which are abridged in John Hutchins' Dorset, new edition, gave rise to a controversy between the author and the rector of Critchill. Bingham also wrote The Pains of Memory: A poem, in two books, London, 1811; 2nd edit., with vignettes, 1812.[1]
