Peter Sears (born 1937) is an American poet who served as Poet Laureate of Oregon.
Life[]
Youth and education[]
Sears was born in New York City in 1937.[1][2]
He graduated from Yale University and the Iowa Writers' Workshop.[3]
Career[]

Sears moved to Oregon in 1974 to teach creative writing at Reed College,[1] and has since taught for the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College. He is active in the publishing company Rubberstampmadness Inc. in Corvallis and Community of Writers in Portland.
His debut book-length collection, Tour, was published in 1987. He has also published 4 chapbooks of poetry and 2 teaching books, Secret Writing and Gonna Bake Me a Rainbow Poem. His work has been published in many magazines and literary journals, widely anthologized and included in the Writer's Almanac radio series. .[3]
Sears founded and manages the Oregon Literary Coalition[4] and co-founded the non-profit organization Friends of William Stafford.
Recognition[]
Sears won the 1999 Peregrine Smith Poetry Competition and the 2000 Western States Poetry Prize for his book of poems, The Brink.[2]
In 2014, Sears was named the 7th Oregon Poet Laureate.[3]
