Primus St. John (born 1939) is an African-American poet and academic.

Life[]
Youth and education[]
St. John was born and raised in New York City.[1]
He attended the University of Maryland and Lewis and Clark College.[1]
Career[]
After graduation St. John taught school in Tacoma, Washington, and at Mary Holmes Junior College in West Point, Michigan.[1]
In 1973 he joined the faculty of Portland State University, where he is a professor of English.[2] He lives in Linn, Oregon.[1]
Recognition[]
He was awarded National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in 1970, 1972, and 1974.[1]
He received the Oregon Book Award for Poetry in 1990.[2]
His 1990 collection Dreamer received the Hazel Hall Award for Poetry, and his 1999 collection Communion won the Western States Book Award.[3]
