Life[]

Youth and education[]

Fischer was born in Wheaton Illinois, the youngest of 12 children. A grandson of abolitionist Jonathan Blanchard, the founder of Wheaton College, he was born in the house in which Blanchard had died.[1]

He attended Wheaton College from 1918 to 1920, and Pomona College, California, in 1922. He then matriculated to Harvard Law School, graduating in 1924.[1]

He then practiced law for 15 years. In 1941 he entered private business, serving as executive vice-president of Cuneo Press, president of Combined Paper Mills, a director of the National Tea Company, and a member of the Salvation Army advisory board. After retiring he ran Associated Consultants of Wheaton, Illinois.[1]

As a prep school student, Fischer submitted a poem to Poetry, which earned him an invitation to meet editor Harriet Monroe and, after some revision of his poem, publiction in 1922. He published again in Poetry, the last time in 1984.[1]

In 1985 he published a collection of poetry, An Aged Man Remembers April, dedicated to Monroe.[1]

He and his wife, Marita, had a daughter.[1]

Writing[]

Jill P. Baumgrther, professor of English at Wheaton, has remarked on Fischer's poetry's "melodic echoes of Frost, Wordsworth, Keats, scripture.... It is a stunning combination of sound and form, metaphor and story, that lingers long after you’ve closed the book. This is poetry rooted in a real tradition of living and writing. This is poetry that will last."[1]
