Sono Nis Press is a Canadian publishing company based in British Columbia.
About[]
The company has published more than 400 titles by more than 200 authors.[1] It has roughly 140 books in print, and publishes about 5 new titles a year.[2]
History[]
Sono Nis Press was founded in 1968 by J. Michael Yates, of the University of British Columbia department of creative writing, as a literary house specializing in poetry and fiction. The name was taken from a character in the first book published by the company, The Man in the Glass Octopus, Sono (Italian for “I am”) Nis (Anglo-Saxon for “is not”).[3]
The firm's books were almost exlusively designed and produced by Morriss Printing of Victoria, British Columbia. Richard Morriss of Morriss Printing bought Sono Nis in 1976, and moved it to Victoria. He hired poet and academic Robin Skelton as managing editor, and increased the publication schedule to 12 new titles per year. [3]
Morriss also began publishing regional non-fiction: regional histories, literary criticism, guide books, books of general interest, and journals and biographies.[3] Many of those titles remain in print today. When he died in 1994, the company was taken over by his daughter Diane Morriss.[1]
In 2002, Morriss and her husband, graphic designer Jim Brennan, moved Sono Nis to Winlaw, a small town in the southern British Columbia interior.[1]
