Specimens of American Poetry was the earliest major anthology of American poetry.[1]
Overview[]
Specimens of American Poetry was edited by Samuel Kettell, and published in 1829 by S.G. Goodridge & Son of Boston. Published in 3 volumes, it contained 454 selections from 188 poets[1] (some authorities say 189).[2]
Kettell contributed a historical introduction and a chronological listing of American poetry from the Bay Psalm Book through 1829.[2] He also provided profiles of each poet included.
The anthology was criticized for editorial inconsistencies, and for including minor poets.[2]
The publisher lost $1,500 on the deal, and was reportedly insulted by hearing that it had become known as "Goodridge's Kettle of American Poetry".[2]
