Steven P. Schneider is an American poet, prose author, literary critic, and academic.[1]

Life[]

Education[]

Schneider earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, graduating cum laude at Syracuse University in 1973. In 1977 he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing at the University of Iowa. In 1986, he earned a doctorate in English and American literature, also at the University of Iowa.[2]

  • Assistant professor, department of English, University of Puget Sound, 1987-1990.
  • Director, Campus Writing Center, and lecturer in department of liberal studies, University of Washington at Bothell, 1991-1995.
  • Associate professor (tenured), department of English, University of Nebraska at Kearney, August 1995 - June 2001; University of Nebraska System Graduate College Faculty Fellow.
    • Graduate program director, department of English, University of Nebraska at Kearney, September 1997 - August 2000.
  • Chair and professor (tenured), department of English, University of Texas-Pan American, August 2001 – June 2007.

Current Position[]

Schneider is a professor of English and the director of New Programs and Special Projects in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Texas-Pan American. As the Director of New Programs and Special Projects, he is in charge of forming and implementing interdisciplinary as well as new programs for the College of Arts and Humanities, as well as community outreach programs for literacy, teacher development, and college readiness standards. He also directs the program development of FESTIBA – UTPA’s annual Festival of Books and Arts.[3] This is a university and community week-long program celebrating the arts and humanities.

Schneider also develops key fundraising partnerships in support of FESTIBA with government, corporations, foundations, and non-profit organizations, including: Congressman Reuben Hinojosa, The Monitor, Texas Book Festival, Reading Is Fundamental, Gear-Up, Scholastic, Region One Educational Service Center. Dr. Schneider also established the Creative Arts and Writing Institute in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.[3] </r

He has raised money for the university through grant writing, including 2 Big Read grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In the vein of literacy, he develops and co-ordinates the Reading Rock Stars program in conjunction with the Texas Book Festival in Region One public schools.[2]

He is also a professor in the department of English, teaching courses on contemporary American poetry, multiethnic literatures of the United States, and creative writing.[1]

Borderlines: Drawing Border Lives (Fronteras: dibujando las vidas fronterizas)

Borderlines is a collaborative effort between Dr. Schneider and his artist-wife, Reefka Schneider. Featuring 25 drawings in charcoal, conte crayons, and pastels, Borderlines pairs portraits of people who live and work along the U.S.-Mexico border with bilingual poems that have been inspired by the art.[4][5][6]

TheSchneiders have also made Borderlines into a traveling art exhibit and used it to create teaching workshops.[7]  It has been reviewed by several media, including the San Antonio Express-News,[8] the Library Journal,[9] and Texas Border Business.[10]
